Grapefruit Diet (Hollywood Diet)

This diet consists of eating a few select vegetables, small amounts of protein , and grapefruits, believed to contain a special fat-burning enzyme. The original diet was called Hollywood diet. Now, there are over a dozen grapefruit diets.

The diet lasts for 3 weeks. On a typical day, the calories are restricted to less than 800 calories. This is a severe calorie restricted diet. It is incredibly monotonous and not very healthy.
This diet works not because of any special enzymes in grapefruit. Grapefruit can help you lose weight simply because the mass-to-energy ratio, that is, the high weight to calorie ratio, makes you full before you get too many calories, according to Dr. Shintani, originator of Hawaii Diet. There is no reason to stay on such a restricted single food type diet. According to Dr. Shintani, there are hundreds of foods that help to promote weight loss if you follow EMI of the food (energy mass index).

Pro

This plan is great for people who love grapefruit. Grapefruit has no fat, is low in calories and sodium, and is packed with vitamin C. The pink grapefruit is a rich source for beta-carotene. The plan produces quick weight loss, primarily due to loss of body water.
There is no need to count calories as in some other plans.

Con

There is absolutely no scientific proof that grapefruit contains fat-burning enzymes.
The very low calorie diet and encouragement to drink copious amounts of beverages containing caffeine make this diet dangerous.

This plan is low in protein, fiber, and several important vitamins and minerals. Any diet that relies so much on a single food is too restrictive.

This diet does not work in all cases.
